Obituary: Wairarapa Daily Times, 5 December 1916

The Rev. J.A. McKenzie, chaplain with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, writes as follows concerning the late Sergeant "Wally" Denby of Masterton.

France, 19/10/16

Dear Madam - Just a line to assure you of my very deep sympathy in your terrible loss. You will at least have the satisfaction of knowing that your dear husband fell while nobly doing his duty, and that it was the end of a period of service during which his work was always recognised by his officers as excellent. Personally, I have very pleasant memories of our time together on the Egyptian desert looking for plants and flowers. We had a common interest in that we were both flower lovers. His thoughts were always of his home and loved ones, and we know that not even death can break the bands of true and pure love. May the God of all comfort be with you and yours to support and comfort you at all times. - Yours sincerely, J.A. McKenzie, Chaplain, N.Z.R.B.
