School Production

The students of Masterton Intermediate School have taken to the stage many times over the last fifty years. Threaded throughout the history of the school are the numerous productions held in the school hall. The reviews of these shows reflecte the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication that collectively produce the early experiences of drama, memories that last a lifetime and talents and skills that hold fast throughout many facets of adulthood.

The first production held at M.I.S was in 1969, ʻThe Parker Planʼ was written for children and was appealing because of the novel imagery of children outwitting their parents. This was enjoyed so much that it was repeated in 1974 after ʻMcKenzieʼs Goldʼ which was staged the year before in 1973.

Judy Cundy was one of the dedicated Production Directors of the middle years of the school. She first directed a show for M.I.S in 1982. It was the musical ʻStar Blazeʼ. Alongside Musical Director Barbara Anderson, they created a fantastic show. John McDonald, the Principal at the time, wrote a letter of appreciation to Judy Cundy. In it he stated "Hundreds of us will remember Star Blaze for the rest of our lives, thanks to you."

Throughout the years of the 70ʼs, 80ʼs and 90ʼs, the school held many other major productions and over this time hundreds of children have worked alongside the dedicated drama and music directors, lighting and back stage crew, to create some enjoyable and most memorable shows. Some of these included: Rats - a musical adaptation of the Pied Piper of Hamlin.

Dragon Master - an evil wizard, a maiden in distress, a hungry dragon and, of course a poor-but-honest hero.

The Little Luncheonette of Terror - where strange things are afoot in Peteʼs Luncheonette, including strange sounds from the radio and the summonising of Mongo , a rock eating monster from the centre of the world,

The Boy Who Was Different - Solomon - a boy with rather extraordinarypowers and a vivid imagination who manages to turn a normal day upside down resulting in strange things happening to children and teachers alike.- Set in WWII in Poland with three children who are separated from their parents due to the war and their epic journey to find them.

The Silver Sword - set in WWII in Poland with three children who are separated from their parents due to the war and their epic journey to find them.

Tom Sawyer- based on the novel by Mark Twain.
