Johnson, Ralph: New Zealand. 1996, 2006
Beginning his storytelling career with a performance by a campfire on a New Zealand beach, Ralph is full of the contradictions of being human - he's a roamer who loves to stay at home, who loves the simple life but complicates it and who's not sure if he'll live forever or if today might be his last, consequently lives as if both were true. His traditional tales range from the droll to the whimsical to the powerfully mythic. In the 1980's Ralph fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a travelling storyteller and since then, in addition to retellings of traditional tales, has developed longer, more theatrical shows including The 3 Golden Hairs a historical story, Ironside and an autobiographical show My Canterbury Tale, about growing up in Canterbury, NZ. In 2005 came the autobiographical collaboration Te Haerenga with Moira Wairama, Tony Hopkins and Mary-Alice Arthur.
