Panel 92: Gum Tree.

Caption

This is the only panel not on linen. It is petit point worked without a pattern on 18tpi single canvas in standard DMC cottons, blocked and backed with heavy acid-free board. The background scenery is free stitchery, sheep being included as part of Wairarapa's pastoral scene.

Worked by Lois Luttrell (nee Ritchie). Born in 1919 at Featherston. Educated at Lyttleton High School and Canterbury University School of Art, Lois worked in a drapers shop. Always artistic and having a family background of art, she has been drawing her own needlepoint patterns for many years, and in fact during the war years when restrictions were imposed on imports, she supplied desigs to Kirkcaldie's in Wellington for their many customers. Needlepoint is Lois' favourite embroidery technique and she runs a monthly morning for friends. Mother of two sons, she enjoys the artistic flair being shown by their children. Her interests include all hand work, painting and reading.
